Goodie Bag Cost Calculator Methodology
How the Goodie Bag Cost Calculator picks per-kid spend tiers, where the dollar anchors come from, and how we keep the per-bag suggestions honest.

How We Calculate
The calculator takes your kid count and tier preference (budget / standard / premium) and returns the total dollar amount plus a per-bag content suggestion. We also show all three tier totals side-by-side so you can compare without re-running the math.
Core formula
perKid = tier === 'budget' ? 3
: tier === 'standard' ? 5
: 10
total = kids × perKid
budgetTotal = kids × 3
standardTotal = kids × 5
premiumTotal = kids × 10
perBagHint = closestReferenceRow(kids).perBagSuggestionWe anchor per-kid dollar amounts at the midpoint of each tier band. Budget is $2–$4 (anchor $3), standard is $4–$7 (anchor $5), premium is $8–$15 (anchor $10). Most parties land within $1 of the anchor.
Assumptions & Defaults
| Variable | Default | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Budget tier per-kid | $3 | Midpoint of $2–$4. One small toy + a treat + a sticker in a plain bag fits this range at bulk-pack pricing. |
| Standard tier per-kid | $5 | Midpoint of $4–$7. Themed bag with 4–6 items: a small toy, sticker pack, mini craft, and candy. Most parents land here. |
| Premium tier per-kid | $10 | Midpoint of $8–$15. Themed gift box with a book or quality toy plus 2–3 accents. Common for milestones, adult parties, and themed events. |
| Kid range | 5–30 | Reference table covers the most common kids party sizes. The calculator handles any value 1–100. |
| Bulk-pack threshold | 15+ kids | Oriental Trading, Amazon party assortments, and Costco hit a 20–30% price break around the 24-pack threshold. Bulk advice kicks in at 15+ kids. |
| % of total party budget | 5–10% | Goodie bags should be a small slice of total spend — most party budgets allocate 5–10% to favors. Above 15% is a re-balance signal. |

Edge Cases & Limitations
For under-3 parties, skip the bag entirely. Small parts are a choking hazard and most toddlers cannot carry a goodie bag home anyway — a single quality item handed at the door works better. For adult parties, the standard $5 tier often feels too cheap; either skip favors entirely or go premium ($10–$15) with a single curated item (a candle, mini bottle, cookie sleeve). For milestone parties (sweet 16, 50th, wedding-adjacent), favor budgets routinely cross $20 per guest into wedding-favor territory — outside the scope of this calculator.
The cost anchors are US national midpoints and do not account for premium regions (New York, California, Hawaii) where per-bag pricing can run 15–25% higher. The calculator does not currently account for tax, shipping on bulk orders, or international currency conversion.
